Recently, there has been concern among internet users about the disappearance of Pierrefitte. However, the city has not vanished but merged with Saint-Denis. In April 2023, the mayors of Saint-Denis and Pierrefitte proposed this merger, which was not part of their 2020 municipal election program. The main argument for the merger was that the new Saint-Denis would become the second-largest commune in Île-de-France, with nearly 150,000 inhabitants, just behind Paris. This status would provide the city and its residents with more infrastructure and attract new investors. On May 31, 2024, the merger was voted on during simultaneous municipal councils, passing with a majority in both cities. The merger did not require mandatory public consultation and was approved by the prefecture. This merger will result in tax reductions for Pierrefitte residents, who will also benefit from Saint-Denis's school canteen and housing policies. The new city, now with 140,978 inhabitants, will receive a special grant for merged communes, totaling about 6 million euros over three years. Pierrefitte has not disappeared but has become a delegated commune of Saint-Denis, with residents retaining their postal addresses.
