An 18-year-old Information Technology major at George Mason University, originally from Egypt, was arrested by the FBI for allegedly planning a mass casualty attack on the Israeli Consulate in New York. The investigation began in May after an anonymous tip about concerning social media posts. The FBI traced these posts back to the student, Abdella Eelen Taha Muhammad Hassan, who allegedly had multiple accounts with pro-ISIS and Al-Qaeda content promoting violence against Jewish people. An FBI confidential source communicated with Hassan online, during which Hassan allegedly attempted to recruit the source to carry out the attack, sharing ISIS propaganda and bomb-making instructions. The university community was informed of the arrest, which follows previous incidents involving vandalism and threats on campus. In response, George Mason University has emphasized its security measures, including a police force, SWAT team, and collaboration with law enforcement agencies. Authorities are working to deport Hassan back to Egypt.
