Octavia Piana, a 32-year-old speleologist, was trapped in a cave system in Northern Italy for 75 hours after falling 13 feet and sustaining injuries to her ribs, spine, knee, and face. This was her second entrapment in the same cave network, with the first requiring a 40-hour rescue. The recent rescue was more complex due to the uncharted nature of the cave branch, requiring rescuers to use explosive charges to clear obstacles and devise a communication system since normal radio signals were ineffective. The rescue team worked in shifts to carry Piana on a stretcher through the treacherous cave, stopping every 90 minutes to assess her condition. The operation captivated Italy, reminiscent of other high-profile cave rescues, such as the 2018 Thai soccer team rescue. Piana was airlifted to a hospital and has decided to quit cave exploring.
