Police approached a man in a Walmart parking lot due to an outstanding warrant for auto theft. As his girlfriend loaded groceries, the man sped off with their two children in the van, initiating a high-speed chase. During the pursuit, the van's door opened, and a 9-month-old boy, still strapped in his car seat, was ejected from the vehicle. The infant flipped multiple times before landing on the roadside. The suspect called the mother to inform her of the baby's location. It took police an hour to find the shivering infant, who was barefoot in 24-degree weather. The suspect, Zachary Shenko, was later arrested and charged with child endangerment and fleeing. Doctors warned that the infant's low body temperature could have been life-threatening if left in the cold longer. Shenko admitted to fleeing out of fear, acknowledging it was a poor decision.
