The head of Russia's nuclear defense forces, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, and his deputy were killed in an explosion in Moscow. The attack was reportedly planned by Ukraine, according to Ukrainian security sources. The bomb, hidden in an electric scooter, was remotely detonated and had the power of about 300 grams of TNT. Kirillov was the head of the Russian military's chemical weapons unit, which has been sanctioned by several countries, including the U.S. and the UK, for using chemical weapons in Ukraine. Ukrainian security services claim Russia has used chemical weapons approximately 4,800 times since its invasion in February 2022. The Ukrainian SBU described the attack as a special operation, labeling Kirillov a war criminal and a legitimate target.
